MVX versus Spreadsheets

Building and maintaining tree-type data sets, such as the process and activity hierarchy found in business models, is notoriously difficult to do in spreadsheet applications like Excel or database applications such as Access. 

The difficulty arises because neither spreadsheets nor databases are designed with these tree type data structures in mind.  For example, to model a tree structure with a spreadsheet, one has to create multiple duplicates of the data (one for each point the data appears in the tree) and then aggregate the data across those multiple sets.  As soon as the model structure changes, these duplicated sets must then be added, moved or deleted to match the revised structure.  This is difficult to establish and even more difficult to maintain accurately.

Metavizix MVX Business Modeller’s process and activity hierarchy model builder solves the above problems; the user need define each process and activity only once and then simply defines each link between those items.  The modelling engine then automatically creates the tree structure linking all of the elements and then uses recursive techniques to calculate the costs at every point in that tree structure.  Those costs are then automatically recalculated when the structure, allocations or activities and processes change.  This is the fastest and most accurate way possible to build and maintain this type of data model.
